Abstract

Objective: To investigate the work pressure level and coping style of the first aid nurses and explore the relationship between them. Methods: Ninety nine first aid nurses were selected by random sampling method from 10 hospitals in Guangdong Pearl River Delta area. Then they were investigated by Nurse Job Stressors Scale(NJSS) and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ). Results: The total score of the NJSS of the first aid nurses was(3.33±0.49). The descending order of dimensions was workload and time allocation problem, nursing specialty and nursing work problems, patient care issues, work environment and resource issues, management and interpersonal relationship problems, respectively. The score of positive coping style of these nurses was statistically higher than the national norm(1.89±0.49), while the negative coping score was statistically lower than the national norm(1.04±0.56). The job stressors level was negatively correlated with positive coping style scores(r=-0.28, P0.01). Conclusion: The job stressors level of the first aid nurses was high, but they used more positive coping style. Nursing administrators should pay attention to decrease the work pressure of the first aid nurses, arrange work properly, and encourage them use effective coping ways.
