Analysis of HIV/AIDS related risk behaviors among female sex workers at entertainment establishments in two districts of Beijing

Objective To investigate HIV/AIDS related risk behaviors among female sex workers(FSWs)at entertainment establishments in two districts of Beijing.Methods Face to face questionnaires were administered and blood samples were collected from FSWs at entertainment establishments in two districts of Beijing(one rural and the other urban).Results A total of 341 FSWs were investigated,and the median number of their clients in the last week were 3,and this number was higher in the urban district than in the rural district.The proportion of condom use in the last sex trade with their clients was 72.9%,and that with their regular sex partners was 49.3%.The reported rate of consistent condom use in the last month was 44.1% with the clients and 26.7% with the regular sex partners.The use of condoms in the last sex trade and the rate of consistent condom use with the clients were higher in the urban district.Of the FSWs interviewed 2.9% reported the use of drug.In the last year 41.1% of the FSWs had symptoms related with STIs.The laboratory tests displayed positive results for syphilis(RPR 1.17%,TP 12.2%),with no positive HIV cases.Conclusions The reported risk behaviors have the potential to precipitate the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among FSWs at entertainment establishments,especially in the urban districts.The HIV/AIDS behavioral interventions need to be strengthened among FSWs at entertainment establishments,particularly in the urban districts.
