A Survey on AIDS Related Behaviors among Commercial Female Sex Workers

Abstract

Objective To study the knowledge of AIDS and high risk behaviors related to HIV/AIDS among commerctal female sex workers(FSWs)in entertainment establishments in Shantou.Methods FSWs were interviewed face-to-face by using designed questionnaire and the data were analyzed with SPSS10.0.Results Totally 118 FSWs were interviewed,the average age was 21.08±4.28 years.The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 54.81% among 118 FSWs.The average age of those who first took commercial sex activities was 19.61±2.98 years.80.5% of the 118 women engaged in commercial sex activities used condoms persistently within the recent month.4.2 % of FSWs reported taking medicine.63.6 % had STIs syrnptoms and more than half of them bought medicine by themselves or were not treated.Conclusion The AIDS related knowledge level was low and high risk behaviors were common among FSWs It is urgent to implement health promotion and behavioral intervention to control HIV spreading from FSW to general population.
