Abstract
A talented and distinguished scholar,Polivanov was persecuted due to his opposing views against the dominant Marrism of his time. Polivanov had a wide range of thoughts, mainly on sociolinguistics, semiotics and phonetics. Even to this day, his views on historical-comparative approach, language change, nature and task of sociolinguistics, and his research in linguistic poetics and applied linguistics remain significant for present linguistic research.
