A comparative study of XiaoYu decoction and sertraline in the treatment of depression

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and side effects of XiaoYu decoction and sertraline in the treatment of depression.Methods A total of 440 patients were randomized into study group(260 cases) and control group(180 cases),which were treated with XiaoYu decoction and sertraline respectively for 6 weeks.Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAMD) was used to assess the efficacy.Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS) and results of laboratory examination were used to assess the side effects.Results The total scores of HAMD in both groups were significantly lower at the 1st,2nd,4th and 6th weekend after treatment than the baseline(P0.01).The cost in study group was relatively low,and side effects in study group was significantly slighter than that in control group(P0.01).Conclusion Both XiaoYu decoction and sertraline have satisfactory efficacy in the treatment of depression.Compared with sertraline,XiaoYu decoction is more tolerable because of its higher safety and fewer side effects.
