Abstract

OBJECTIVE:To study the effect of menthol and azone on percutaneous permeation of lidocaine in gel.METHO_ DS:10%lidocaine gel containing different concentrations of menthol and azone was preparated. The steady state flux of lidocaine from gel was determined in vitro on excised mouse skin utilizing modified Franz diffusion cells. The accumulation permeation amounts and permeation rate were calculated.RESULTS:The lidocaine flux values(mg/h)ranged from0.834without enhancer,to0.810,1.947and0.904in the presence of1%,3%,5%menthol,to0.702,0.981,0.788in the presence of1%,3%,5%azone,to1.229,0.986,0.914in a combination of3%menthol and1%,3%,5%azone.CONCLUSION:The maximum enhancement was obtained in the gel with3%menthol.
