Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of menthol and azone on percutaneous permeation of meloxicam from gel.METHODS 0.75% meloxicam gel containing different concentrations of menthol and azone was prepared. The steady state flux of meloxicam from gel was determined in vi tro on excised mouse skin utilizing modified Franz diffusion cells. The accum ulatio n permeation amounts and permeation rate were calculated. RESULTS The meloxicam permeation values (mg/h) ranged from 0.862 without enhancer, to 0 .839,1.973 and 0.967 in the presence of 1%, 3%, 5% menthol, to 0.693, 0 .969, 0.789 in the presence of 1%, 3%, 5% azone, to 1.237, 0.997, 0.9 28 in a combination of 3% menthol and 1%, 3%, 5% azone.CONCLUSION The maximum enhancement was obtained in the meloxicam gel with 3% menthol .
