Clinical Observations on the Efficacy of Acupuncture in Treating Primary Dysmenorrhea

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on primary dysmenorrhea. Methods One hundred and twenty-two patients were randomly allocated to acupuncture,Western medicine and placebo groups and treated with acupuncture,Ibuprofen and Vitamin B_1,respectively.Treatment was given for 3 menstrual cycles. Results The total efficacy rate was 96.15% in the acupuncture group,80.00% in the Western medicine and 13.30% in the placebo group.Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the acupuncture group and the Western medicine or the placebo group. Conclusion Acupuncture and Western medicine have a therapeutic effect on primary dysmenorrhea and acupuncture is superior to Western medicine.
