On the Fengpu Opening-up of Wasteland in Western Regions in the Tang Dynasty

After the Tang Dynasty unified Western Regions,it controlled the large region including the present-day Xinjiang and Central Asia.Out of military needs and the necessity to strengthen border regions,the Tang government asked the garrison troops to open up a lot of wasteland.This paper,on the basis of the documents unearthed in Turpan,elaborates,from the aspects of crops grown,the amount of opened-up wasteland,and the number of people,on the situation of opening up wasteland by fengpu,the most basic military unit in Western Regions.
