Abstract

Objective To study the expressions and its significance of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) and Caspase-3 in human pterygium. Methods The immunohistochemical Elivision method was used to examine the expressions of PCNA and Caspase-3 in 20 cases of pterygium and 10 cases normal conjunctiva. Results The positive rate of Caspase-3 was 55.0% in pterygium and was 90% in the normal conjunctive. The positive rate of PCNA was 95.0% in pterygium and was 60% in the normal conjunctive. There was significant difference in the expressions of Caspase-3 and PCNA between the pterygium and normal conjunctive(P0.05).Conclusion There is a low Caspase-3 expressions and a high PCNA expression in pterygium which suggest that there is abnormal apoptosis and proliferation and that the PCNA and caspase-3 plays an important role in incidence and development of pterygium.
