Abstract
Objective To evaluate the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA)、Bcl-xl gene and bak gene products in pterygium, and study the ralationship of them with proliferating status of pterygium. Methods The immunohistochemical methods was performed in study of expression of PCNA、Bcl-xl and bak in 40 pterygial apecimens. Results The expression of PCNA in the pterygium was significantly higher than that of normal conjunctira (P0.01).Bcl-xl staining noted predominantly in the basal epithelial layer of cells. but normal conjunctiral specimens showed no enidence of it.there was no difference in the expression of bak between pterygium and nomal conjunctiva. The expression of PCNA was derect related to that of Bcl-xl.Conclusions The abnormal expression of PCNA and Bcl-xl may be a positive factor in the pathogenesis of pterygium. The results suggest that pterygia derelopment may result from abnormal preliferation and unbalanced apoptosis.
