Abstract
Objective To study the expressions of PCNA, Bcl-2 and Bax and their roles in human pterygium.MethodsThe immunohistochemical Elivision method was used to examine the expressions of PCNA, Bcl-2 and Bax in 20 cases of pterygium and 10 cases of normal conjunctiva. ResultsThe positive rates of PCNA, Bcl-2 and Bax were 95.0%, 95.0% and 80.0% in the pterygium cases and 60.0%, 20.0% and 60.0% in the normal conjunctiva cases, respectively. There were significant differences in the expressions of Bcl-2 and PCNA between the two groups (P0.05), but no significant difference in the expression of Bax was found (P0.05).ConclusionThe unbalance of PCNA, Bcl-2 and Bax may be a positive factor in the pathogenesis of pterygium. The results suggest that pterygial development may result from a co-operation of abnormal proliferation and unbalanced apoptosis.
