Abstract

Objective To study the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in pterygium and its clinical significance. Methods The immunohistochemical Elivision method was used to examine the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in pterygium(20 cases) and normal conjunctiva(10 cases). Results The positive expression of Bcl-2 was 19 cases and 2 cases respectively in pterygium and normal conjunctiva. The positive expression of Bax was 16 cases and 6 cases respectively in pterygium and normal conjunctiva. There was significant difference in expression of Bcl-2 between pterygium and normal conjunctiva(χ2=17.860,P0.001).There was no significant difference in expression of Bax between pterygium and normal conjunctiva(χ2=3.068,P0.05).Conclusion The disbalance of Bcl-2 and Bax may be a positive factor in the pathogenesis of pterygium, pterygium development may result from a co-operation of abnormal proliferation and disbalanced apoptosis.
