Effects of donepezil in treatment of vascular dementia

Abstract

AIM: To observe the clinical efficacy of donepezil in treating mild to moderate vascular dementia (VaD). METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with mild to moderate VaD completed the trial.Donepezil group (n=35,M 27,F 8;age(70±s6) a) were treated with donepezil,5 mg,po,qd. Placebo group (n = 34,M 26, F 8; age (70±7) a) were treated with placebo (vitamin C),1 tablet, po,qd . The whole course of treatment for each group was 8 wk. RESULTS: The clinical efficacies were 74 % and 18 % for donepezil and placebo groups,respectively, demonstrating significant difference between the two groups (P 0.01). Adverse reactions of doneperil were mild. CONCLUSION: Donepezil is effective in treating mild to moderate VaD patients.
