The reason and prevention of complications after the plug-mesh tension-free inguinal hernioplasty

Objective To investigate the reason of complications reported after the plug-mesh tension-free inguinal hernioplasty,the measures of prevention and treatment of these complications.Methods 455 cases of clinical data in which patients receiving plug-mesh tension-free hernioplasty between Mar 2009 and Jun 2011 were retrospectively analyzed.Results Of all,27(5.93%) cases had postoperative complications.There were scrotal hydroceles in 6 cases,urinary retention in 8 cases,liquefaction of subcutaneous tissue in 5 cases,infection in 3 cases,postoperative chronic pain in 3 cases,and hernia recurrence in 2 cases.All of the cases were cured and discharged from hospital.Conclusions The plug-mesh tension-free inguinal hernioplasty is safe and efficient,the key to the prevention of postoperative complications lies in the familiarity with the anatomy of the inguinal region,standardized surgical procedure and the appropriate perioperative treatment.
