Abstract

Objective To investigate the role of survivin in predicting recurrence, distant metastasis, and prognosis of gastric carcinoma by understanding the expression of survivin. Methods Survivin expression in gastric carcinoma was detected by immunohistochemical assay. The patients were divided into two groups(survivin positive and survivin negative groups) according to the status of survivin expression. They all received identical chemotherapy and other treatment and were followed up.The recurrence, distant metastasis, and prognosis of the disease in the two groups were compared. Results 78 patients were included in this study.47 of the patients were survivin positive, with a positive rate of 60.25%.12 to 24 months after treatemt, the recurrence rate was significantly higher in the survivin positive group than in the survivin negative group([51 ± 2]% vs.[9 ± 1]% , P 0.05).Conclusions The expression rate of survivin is increased with the rising degree of malignant infiltration.Metastasis and recurrence occurr earlier in the patients with positive survivin expression after therapy.Survivin can be used as one of the markers to predict the prognosis of gastric carcinoma.
