Abstract

Objective To study the effect of iron deficiency on serum lipids and lipid peroxidation of liver by controlling iron intake of rats. Methods Male SD rats were randomly divided into two groups:the control group(the iron content of feeds was 93.3 mg/kg) and iron deficiency group(the iron content was 9.6 mg/kg),15 in each groups. After 6 weeks treatment, the rats were killed by exsanguinations. The blood was sampled to separate serum and the livers were harvested to measure absolute liver mass and relative liver mass. The blood samples were analyzed for triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC),high density lipoprotein(HDL),low density lipoprotein(LDL),hemoglobin, serum iron levels and total iron binding capacity by biochemical method. Then livers were prepared to homogenate, and tested for GPx,SOD and MDA.Results Compared with the control group, the level of serum hemoglobin in iron deficiency group was decreased(t=30.919,P0.01) and it reached the level of moderate to severe anemia. The levels of body mass, absolute liver mass and relative liver mass were lower(t=4.393,9.068,8.805,respectively,P0.01);the levels of serum TC,HDL and LDL were lower(t=9.017,9.519,3.880,respectively,P0.01);the level of SOD was decreased, and the level of MDA was lower than the control group(t=2.810,P0.05).Conclusion Iron deficiency may effect on serum lipids and lipid peroxidation of liver in rats by interfering with the fat metabolism and antioxidant system of normal liver cells.
