Abstract

AIM The effect of MK 801 on long term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampal CA1 area was observed. MOTHEDS Electrical stimulation was delivered to the Schaffer commissural fiber system and extracellular recording was performed at the pyramidal cell body layer in CA1 area of hippocampal slices. Population spikes were recorded to study the induction of LTP. RESULT A tetanic stimulation (100 Hz, 1 s) could induce LTP in hippocampal CA1 area of rat. LTP could still be induced when MK 801 was added. LTP could not be inhibited adding MK 801 after the induction of LTP. LTP could not be induced after brain slices were incubated with MK 801 for 2 hours. CONCLUSION Our study suggested that pretreating with MK 801 could inhibit LTP.
