Abstract

AIM The effect of nicotine on long term potentiation (LTP) in hippocampal CA 1 area was observed. METHOD Electrical stimulation was delivered to the Schaffer commissural fiber system and extracellular recording was performed at the pyramidal cell body layer in CA 1 area of hippocampal slices. Population spikes were recorded to study the induction of LTP. RESULTS The results showed nicotine could induce long term potentiation in hippocampal CA 1 area of rat. C 6 could block nicotinic LTP,but atropine couldnt do it. The amplitude of tetanic LTP could be increased by nicotine. CONCLUSION Nicotine could directly induce by nicotinic receptor the induction of tetanic LTP in hippocampal CA 1 area of rat. Nicotine could facilitate tetanic LTP. The results suggest that both of induction mechenism were different.
