Abstract
Objective To evaluate the value of C-reactive protein (CRP) in differentiating tuberculous pleural effusion from malignant pleural effusion patients.Methods Twenty-one tuberculous pleural effusion patients were compared with 11 malignant pleural effusion patients on the level of C-reactive protein in pleural fluid, serum and pleural effusion CRP/serum CRP.Results The tuberculous pleural effusion patients had higher values than that in the malignant pleural effusion patients on the level of pleural fluid CRP (P0.001), of serum CRP (P 0.01) and pleural fluid CRP/serum CRP (P 0.05).Conclusion The measurement of CRP could be used as an indicator for differentiating tuberculous pleural effusion from malignant pleural effusion.
