A Preliminary Study of the Ming Dynasty's Administration of the Wumeng Tribes and their Relations of Political Game

From the Yuan dynasty to the Ming dynasty,the four tribes of Wuman,Wusa,Dongchuan and Mangbu inhabiting the region bordering Yunnan,Guizhou and Sichuan of China experienced unsmooth social transformations and had a culture different from that of the Han people.Though the Ming Government had a carrot-stick policy towards them,it was not effective.These tribes had disputes among themselves but fought together with the outsiders.Because during the whole process of the Ming dynasty these tribes had conflicts with the Ming Government in most cases,the up-coming Qing dynasty had to face a turbulent situation no matter what policy it wanted to implement.This fact reveals the historical necessity but it is praiseworthy that the Ming Government took the stability of the border region as an important goal and handled everything under the precondition of maintaining a unified multi-national country.
