Abstract
When the army of The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom were on their way to Hunan and Hubei, the leaders sellected boatmen and miners as their engineer troops. It was the first time in Chinese history to separate troops whose task was to construct military wooks etc. from troops whose task was to fight. The art and principles in commanding these engineer troops have brought active influence to the modernization of Chinese armies ever after.
