Abstract

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic and preventive effects of mitomycin C combined with amniotic membrane transplantation on pterygium. Methods Three hundred and twenty patients (496 eyes) with simple pterygium were randomly divided into two groups. 248 eyes in trial group were treated by mitomycin C combined with amniotic membrane transplantation after resection of pterygium, however, the other 248 eyes in control group were trea-ted only by resection of pterygium combined with amniotic membrane transplantation. The therapeutic effect and recu-rrence rate were observed and compared between the two groups. Results After 12~24 months' follow-up,8 cases (8 eyes) recurred in trial group (7 cases60 years),and recurrence rate was 3.23%. 21 cases (21 eyes) recurred in control group (18 cases 60 years),and recurrence rate was 8.47%.The recurrence rate in trial group was significantly lower than that of control group (P0.01).Conclusion The mitomycin C combined with amniotic membrane transplantation could reduce the recurrence rate after resection of pterygium in patients with simple pterygium.
