Deep - frozen bone allograft in the treatment of bone tumor

Abstract

Objective To study the practical value of deep - frozen bone allograft in the treatment of bone defect after resection of bone tumor. Methods fifty - eight patients with bone tumor underwent tumor resection. The bone defects after resection were replaced with deep - frozen bone allograft. The rejection reaction of bone allograft, bone healing and complication were observed during follow- up. Results All 58 patients were followed up. The mean follow - up time of the patients whose defects replaced with massive allograft with joint cartilage was 22.5 months. Bone healing was observed in all except one patient, infection and rejection reaction were not occurred. The mean follow - up time of the patients whose defects replaced with paniculate bone allograft was 21.5 months. Bone union was seen in all patients ; immunoreaction and infection were not observed. Conclusions Deep - frozen storage can minimize the immuno-reaction of bone allograft. The allograft could be made to fit the bone defect in shape and preserve some joint function. This kind of allograft not only is a structural allograft in biomechanics but also has a feature of osteoinductivity.
