Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of metformin on clomiphene (CC) - resistant polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Methods A total of 23 PCOS patients with CC resistant-anovulation were collected and treated by metformin to evaluate its effect on menstruation, ovulation and pregnancy by comparison of sex hormone, fasting glucose, insulin levels in PCOS patients before and after metformin therapy. Results A significant decrease in levels of the serum testerone and fasting insulin were observed after treatment.Insulin sensitivity was significantly increased( P 0 01).Six out of 23 had more regular menstrual cycles, four patients had ovulation and two patients conceived. After metformin therapy, CC induced ovulation 26 cycles;ovulation rate and pregnancy rate were 61 54% and 23 08% respectively. Conclusions Metformin treatment may reduce hyperandrogeneamia and hyperinsulinemia, and improve ovulation rate in PCOS patients with CC resistant.
