Abstract

[Objective] To investigate the treatment of metformin in clomiphene- resistant women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). [Methods] Metformin was given to 28 clomiphene-resistant women with PCOS for 3 months. The levels of hormones, body mass index(BMI), waist to hip ratio(WHR), menstruation and the ovulation rate were measured both before and after the treatment. [Results] After three months of the treatment of metformin, the ratio of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone(FSH), testosterone(T), fast insulin were significantly decreased (P 0.05). But there was no significant difference in BMI, WHR and fast glucose(P 0.05). 21.43% patients had normal menstruation. After clomiphene was given repeatly, 46.43% patients had ovulated and 4 cases had pregnancies. [Conclusion] Metformin can reduce insulin resistance(IR) and hyperandrogenemia, improve the sensitivity of clomiphene in clomiphene- resistant women with PCOS.It is a new adjuvant treatment in PCOS.
