Evaluation of discovery and treatment of tuberculosis cases in Hainan Province in 2004～2008

Aim To analyze the results of discovery and treatment of tuberculosis cases in Hainan Provinefrom 2004-2008 and assess the effectiveness of implementation of DOTS strategy.Methods Based on the Guideline on Enforcement of Chinese Tuberculosis Control Program and various technical regulations on tuberculosis control all tuberculosis patients were exmamined and treated freely with full course under direct observation of short course treatment and management and the referral and tracing of the patients were conducted online.The results of treatment were assessed by cohort study.Results The coverage of DOTS was 100% in Hainan form 2004~2008.The mean registration rates of sputum positives and new sputum positives were 66.1/100 000 and 59.0/100 000.The total fullfil rate of online reported tubwerculosis cases by integrated hospitals was 71.4% and the total cure rate of new smear positives was 93.0%.Thus all the indicators of results duation this period met the national criteria.Conclusion Under the governmental promise and full implementation of DOTS strategy and various tuberculosis control measures,marked achievements have been made in tuberculosis control including a high discovery and cure rates of tuberculosis patients and all of that have promoted the sustainable progress of TB control program in this province.
