Distributive Character and Antibiotic Resistance Assay of Escherichia Coli Producing Extended-spectrum Beta-lactamases

Abstract

Objective To determine the prevalence and distribution of Escherichia coli producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases, and investigate the antibiotic resistance of this strain. Methods 144 isolates of E.coli separated from October 2000 to March 2001 were detected by Kirby-Bauert test, and the isolates of E.coli were found to be ESBLs positive by ceftamine compound pieces test according to the standard method by NCCLS in 1999 and AMX/CA.CTX etal antibiotc susceptibility test by Kirby-Bacuer test. Results The prevalence of ESBLs in isolates of 144 E.coli was 43.06%(62/144). The highest rate was in sputum and the highest permeative rate was in ICU, next was surgery. The susceptive rate of ESBLs-producing E.coli to imipenem was 100%, to AMX/CA more than 95%, and to aminoglycosides or quinolones was much higher than that of non-ESBLs-producing E.Coli. Conclusions To deal with the ESBLs-producing strains, antibitotics such as impenem, cefoxitin, β lactama/ β lactanase inhibitor combinations and others which are sensitive to such strains can be used.
