Abstract

With the rapid development of tourism in China, tourism translation is lagging behind. In contrast to traditional translation theory,Functionalist Theory views translation from a new perspective, namely, theory of communication and action. According to Functionalist theory, translation is a purposeful trans-culture human activity. And the prime principle that determines any translation process is the purpose of the overall translation action.Despite the fact that there is great discrepancy between tourism materials in Chinese and English, the ultimate goal is to achieve its informative as well as operative function. Therefore, the translator can adopt flexible strategies on the basis of its purpose and function in the process of translation.
