Coping Styles and Academic Achievement of High School Students

Objective:To study the characteristics of high school students' coping styles when they faced frustrations and troubles,and the relationship between coping style and academic achievement.Methods:649 high school students completed questionnaire about middle school students' coping styles.Results:Girls were more inclined to use venting(2.7±0.7/2.4±0.7,F=23.32,P0.01) and endurance(3.2±0.7/3.0±0.8,F=5.08,P0.05)than boys.Boys were more inclined to use illusion coping(2.4±0.9/2.1±0.8,F=15.52,P0.01)than girls;Keystone school students used more problem solving(3.3±0.6/3.1±0.7,F=20.85,P0.01),wince (2.4±0.9/2.1±0.9,F=12. 87,P0.01)and illusion(2.9±0.6/2.8±0.6,F=7.04, P0.01)coping style than common school students;There was no difference between students coming from city or country.High school students in peace family used more problem solving coping than students in unmeant and often quarrel family;students in democratic parental patterns use more problem solving coping than students in indulgent parental pattern;and students in authoritative parental pattern use more illusion coping than students in democratic parental pattern;Students'academic achievement significantly positively correlated with problem solving coping style(r=0.11).Conclusion:Coping style is determined not only by sex,but also by family atmosphere,rearing pattern of parents and status in academic achievements.
