English Antonyms with Different Degrees of Markedness

Abstract
Mention is often made in the literature of markedness in gradable antonyms and relational oposites, Theis paper attempts an exploration into the two states of this concept: markedness and unmarkedness and their realization in these two types of opposites, It is pointed out that semantic markedness is a variable and that under the normal conditions the degrees of markedness in gradable antonyms are greater than those of relational opposites. This difference is then given a functional explanation.
