History of the Collection Origin,Scatter and Loss of Medical Works in Haiyuange

The book collection in Haiyuege dated from the time of Yang Zhaoyu and the book pavilion was built in 1840 for his son,Yang Yizeng. Through the painstaking collection,up to over 200,000 volumes of over 4000 kinds have been collected,in which,there are near 40,000 volumes of over 700 kinds of block- printed edition and transcripts in Song and Yuan dynasties. Book collection is for scholarly research and book storage is for handing down. Additionally,Han's family pays more attention to the management and protection of the stored books. The medical books in Haiyuange compose of three sections,named,82 kinds of Yang's records,4 kinds of books that were not recorded by Yang but supplemented by Wang Zhaozeng,as well as 1 kind of Yang's booklist and the one supplemented by Wang Zhaozeng,but not included in the booklist. Totally,there are 87 kinds of medical books. These medical books had been destroyed or lost due to fire,havoc and turmoil caused by war. At present,the extractive and rare books of Song and Yuan dynasties collected in Hanyuange are stored in National Library,19 block- printed editions of Ming and Qing dynasties are specially stored in Shandong Library and a part of medical books are scattered overseas.
