Abstract

By analysis on segments occasionally found in ancient discussions on calligraphy, it can be discovered that ancient calligraphers had the following kinds of views on calligraphy innovation: collecting of ancient styles, understanding of methods, exploiting, developing inspiration, tracing to their sources, etc. In fact, these views are the most fundamental requirements in the scope of calligraphy. It these requirements are not met, one would never find the access to the art of calligraphy, not to mention entrance into the art palace of calligraphy. Then, where is the breakthrough in calligraphy innovation? By analyzing the formation process of calligraphers styles, it is found that the access to the innovation lies in learning from Nature, i.e. drawing pabulum from the Nature. This is the essence for calligraphy innovation.
