Effects of calcium antagonist on patients with hypertension and myocardial hypertrophy

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of long-acting calcium antagonists on left ventricular hypertrophy and plasma brain natriuretic peptide in patients with hypertension.Methods A total of 120 patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy randomly divided into Adalat groups(A group) and Norvasc group(B group),and treated with Adalat or Norvasc 12 weeks respectively.Diastolic blood pressure(SBP),systolic blood pressure(DBP),plasma brain natriuretic peptide(BNP),left ventricular mass index(LVMI) and left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF) changes and adverse reactions during treatment were observed and compared.Results After 12 weeks treatment,SBP,DBP,BNP and LVMI were significantly reduced,the differences were statistically significant(t=2.39,2.39,2.53,2.46,2.41,2.39,2.50,2.43,P0.05),but no significant changes in LVEF(t=1.63,1.67,P0.05);after treatment,the index values between the two groups showed no statistical significance(t=1.32,1.54,1.35,1.46,1.57,P0.05).There were no severe adverse reactions occurred in both groups(χ2=0.31,P0.05).Conclusions The treatment of long-acting calcium antagonist for hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy can reverse ventricular hypertrophy.
