Abstract

Objective To investigate the antibiotic resistance and extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) production of Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates obtained from the Mental Health Center of Yunnan Province and provide credible antimicrobial susceptibility test results for clinical antibiotic use. Methods A total of 138 clinical isolates of E. coli were collected from Mental Health Center of Yunnan Province from October 2008 to April 2010. Bacteria were identified with BIO-KONT 20E system, The Drug resistance was identified with K-B method. ESBLs were detected according to CLSI recommendations. Results The E. coli isolates were sensitive to Imipenem, amikacin, piperacillin/tazobactam, ceftazidime, aztreonam, levofloxacin, cefepime, tobramycin and the antibiotic resistance rates were 0%, 3.62%, 13.04%, 17.39%, 31.16%, 31.88%, 31.88% and 38.41% respectively. The isolates were resistant to cefotaxime, cefazolin, cefuroxime, thiophene, cotrimoxazole, tetracycline, piperacillin, ampicillin and the antibiotic resistances rates were all above 60%.Conclusion The study indicates antibiotic resistant E. coli isolates are increasing. Clinicians should use antibiotics according to the results of drug susceptibility test and pay more attention to ESBLs.
