Clinical study of percutaneous injection of intradisc and intervertebral foramen with ozone to treat lumbar disc herniation

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety of intradiscal and intervertebral foramen injection with ozone on lumbar disc herniation. Methods Sixty four patients with the symptoms of sciatica and low back pain were selected,including 23 cases with disc bulging,41 protrusion diagnosed by CT or MRI. A 21G needle was punctured into the disc and intervertebral foramen, 10 ml ozone at 50μg/ml and 15 ml at 40μg/ml were injected respectively. Results The patients were followed up from 3 to 6 months after treatment. The therapeutic effect showed that 26 patients (40. 6%) had excellent recovery,and 32 cases (50%) had significant relief of symptoms, and 6 patients (9. 38%) got failure. After 3 to 6 months follow-up, the rate of excellent and good were 84. 4% (54/64 cases) , No serious complications occurred. Conclusion The method of ozone injection into lumbar intervertebral disc and foramen is a safe and effective method for the treatment of the lumbar disc herniation.
