An Analysis on UN Peacekeeping Operations and Collective Security

UN Peacekeeping Operations are those actions initiated by the UN, with militarypersonnel participating, but without coercive means, which are intended to help tomaintain or restore conflicting regions' peace and security. Peacekeeping is a way of maintaining international peace and security created during the time of the Cold War, decolonization and democratization, when collective security could not a-chieve the intended effects. Peacekeeping was not created by the UN, but by the Leagues of Nations, and it is not an action of collective security. Collective security depends on collective strength automatically containing internal aggression, whereas in the practice of peacekeeping, there is no evident aggressor and peacekeeping forces are dispatched voluntarily by UN members. Collective security aims to change the status quo, whereas peacekeeping aims to maintain the status quo.
