Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between blood plasma level of homocysteine (Hcy) and occurrence and severity of coronary heart disease. Methods The total plasma level of homocysteine was determined in seventy patients with coronary heart disease confirmed by coronary angiography and thirty persons with normal coronary angiography for control. The degree of severity of coronary arteriopathy had been assessed by Gensimi scoring system. Other risk factors were analyzed in addition to Hcy and Gensimi's scores. Results The total plasma level of Hcy in patients with coronary arteriopathy was significantly higher than those of normal controls(P0.01). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that plasma Hcy was an independent risk factor for the occurrence of coronary heart disease. Plasma level of Hcy had significant correlation with the severity of coronary arteriopathy(P0.01).Conclusion Plasma level of Hcy is an independent risk factor for the occurrence of coronary heart disease and the increment of its level is closely related to the severity of the disease.
