Abstract

Objective To instruct rational use of antibiotics in clinical practice by investigating the infection distribution of Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates and their drug resistance to 14 antibiotics commonly used.Methods A total of 95 Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates were collected during 2001~2004.Their drug resistance to 14 antibiotics was examined by Kirby-Bauer method.Results The clinical isolates showed strong drug resistance to some of 14 antibiotics.The frequencies of drug resistance to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole,tetracycline,chloramphenicol,ciprofloxacin,gentamicin,levofloxacin and tobramycin were all more than 70%.Furthermore,96.8% isolates were resistant to more than 3 antibiotics.Conclusion The problem of drug resistance is extensively existed in Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates.With the patients infected by Pseudomonas aeruginosa,it should be first treated empirically with ceftazidime,amikacin or the combination of imipenem and amInoglycosides.
