Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of ziprasidone and risperidone on endocrinology and metabolism in schizophrenic patients. Methods A total of 33 patients with schizophrenia were randomly divided into study group(n = 78) and control group(n = 78).Patients in the study group were given ziprasidone, while patients in the control group were given risperidone.Serum prolactin, fasting glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels were compared at baseline,4-week and 8-week after treatment, respectively. Results Compared with those at baseline, serum prolactin level at 4-week and 8-week in the study group showed no significant difference(P 0.05),while the level of the control group was signifi cantly increased(P 0.05);serum prolactin leves at 4-week and 8-week after treatment between two groups were also statistically significant(P 0.05).Compared with baseline, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the two groups showed no significant difference, and also there were no difference between the two groups(P 0.05).Conclusion Ziprasidone has no effects on prolactin, fasting glucose and lipid levels of patients with schizophrenia.
