Abstract

Objective:To assess the relationship between homocysteine(Hcy)and the severity as well as shortterm prognosis in patients with chronic heart failure(CHF).Method:Hcy,N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide(NTproBNP)and serum creatinine were determined in 85patients with CHF(CHF group),79patients with cardiac functional compensatory period(CFC group)and 70healthy case(control group).Left ventricular end-diastolic dimension(LVEDd)and left ventricle ejection fraction(LVEF)were also measured. All CHF patients were followed up for 9months and their cardiovascular events were analyzed.Result:Hcy,LVEDd and NTproBNP were significantly increased in CHF group than those in CFC and control group.NTproBNP in NYHA Ⅳ group was significantly higher than that in NYHA Ⅱ and Ⅲ group.Hcy in NYHA Ⅲ and Ⅳ group was also higher than that in CFC group, and Hcy in NYHA Ⅳgroup was higher than that in NYHA Ⅱgroup.Linear regression analysis showed a significant positive correlation between Hcy and NTproBNP.The cardiovascular events within 9 months were no different in patients with high or normal Hcy.Conclusion:Hcy increases in patients with heart failure. The more severe the degree of heart failure, the higher the level of Hcy is.Hcy is related to the serious degree of heart failure, but not link with short-term prognosis.
