Protective Effect of Berberine on Intestinal Barrier Injury in Severe Acute Pancreatitis in Rats

Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of berberine on intestinal barrier function in severe acute pancreatitis(SAP) in rats.Methods A total of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham operation group(group A,n = 12),operation without medication group(group B,n = 12) and operation with medication group(group C,n =12).Group B was lavaged with physiological saline(1 time/d) 5 d before the operation.Group C was lavaged with berberine(1 time/d) 5 d before the operation.The samples of successful models were taken out 24 h after model establishment,and levels of endotoxin,diamine oxidase and pancreatic amylase in the serum samples were measured.Results The pancreatitis models were established successfully in group B and C.Compared with those in group A,pancreatic and enteric pathological scores,levels of serum amylopsin,diamine oxidase and endotoxin in group B and C were significantly increased(P 0.05); pancreatic pathological score,levels of serum diamine oxidase and endotoxin in group C were significantly decreased,compared with those in group B(P 0.05).Conclusion Berberine can protect intestinal barrier function in severe acute pancreatitis(SAP) in rats.
