Abstract
Objective This study was designed to determine the relationship between serum uric acid level and the presence and severity of coronary heart disease(CHD)in a Uygur population from Xinjiang. Methods The study was designed as a case-control study.A total of 820 subjects were recruited from February 2006 to March 2010 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. The study group consisted of 389 patients with CHD evidenced by coronary arteriography. The control group(CHD-free)consisted of 431 subjects without anomaly in coronary arteriography and no history of heart disease.Serum uric acid level and lipid profile,as well as fasting blood glucose, were measured in all patients before the procedure.CHD severity was expressed as a standard analysis of the numbers of coronary arteries that had a stenosis ≥50%.The association between the serum uric acid level and severity of coronary atherosclerosis was analyzed also. Results In total, the study group was higher as compared to those without CHD [(334.35±70.98)μmol/L vs.(311.41±73.85)μmol/L,P0.001].However,serum uric acid was not significantly associated with the severity of CHD(F=1.842,P=0.139).In addition, after adjusting for significant confounding factors including age, diabetes, smoking, cholesterol and hypertension by multivariate regression analysis, serum uric acid was not an independent risk factor for CHD(OR=1.003,95% CI 0.999-1.005;P=0.185).Conclusions There findings suggest that serum uric acid was not an independent risk factor for CHD,but may be merely a marker of CHD.Further prospective clinical studies are needed to clarify the exact physiopathologic role of serum uric acid in CHD.
