Abstract
Objective: To compare the IL-1β level in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from periodontal diseases in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) with that from systemically healthy person and the relationship between GCF- IL-1β concentration and metabolic condition. Methods: The content of IL-1β was measured by ELISA. The HbA1c con centration in IDDM patients was analysed. Results: Diabetics had significantly higher GCF-IL-1β level as compared to controls. The GCF contents of this inflammatory mediators were significantly highter in moderate or severe periodontal disease patients than that in mild periodontal disease subjects. The GCF-IL-1β did not correlate with HbA1c levels. Conclusions: The GCF-IL-1β level was controled by both local circumstances and systemic factors. The high GCF-IL-1β contents in diabetics may be a consequence of a systemic abnormal response and a more severe periodontal disease may thus be resulted. [
