Abstract
Metonymy, like metaphor,is also an important cognition means and because of its pervasiveness, contributes a lot to polysemy. To find out the metonymic motivation that leads to polysemy is to help us grasp the meanings through extension by metonymy which will be conducive to language teaching and learning. In broad sense, metonymy includes three relations:contiguity, subjection and antonomasia.Like metaphor, these three relations are also based on schemata through which they are embodied and schemata are usually found related to basic level of categories.
