A Study on Polysemy from Metonymic and Metaphorical Perspectives

Abstract

Polysemy is a significant language phenomenon,which is mainly realized by means of metaphor and metonymy.Metaphor is the mapping from source domain to target domain based on the similarity.Metonymy is the mapping in the same domain among different things based on contiguity and salience.As polysemy is one of the difficult aspects in the teaching of English vocabulary, this article explores the possibility of the operation of metaphor and metonymy in developing polysemy,and puts forward some suggestions on college English vocabulary teaching.Introducing metaphor and metonymy into the teaching process will help students grasp vocabulary.
