Factors relevant to condom use during commercial sex activities among female sex workers in community

Objective To explore the factors associated with condom use during commercial sex activities among female sex workers(FSWs) in a community in Guangdong province,and to provide information for making STD/AIDS-related policies and strategies in community.Methods A town in the middle of Guangdong province was selected.Face-to-face interviews were carried out using quantitative questionaire.Results 201 FSWs were recruited mainly from beauty parlors,massage parlors,lets.The average age was 21.8±5.31 years.A total of 89.4% FSWs graduated from junior high school or had lower education.97% of them came from other provinces.The most important reason that FSWs had not used condoms during commercial sex activities was the dislike or refusal from their sex partners.Condom use was associated with the age of their first sex intercourse and taking STD examinations during last six months.Conclusions Intervention aimed at FSW' clients should be integrated into the comprehensive intervention to promote the FSW' condom use during commercial sex activities.Simultaneously new kind of condom should be continuously invented and meliorated to enhance the acceptance of the condoms by both FSWs and their clients.Standardized STDs clinic should be built to insure the quality of STDs treatment for FSWs,and consequently to promote the FSW' condom use during commercial sex activities.
