Condom use among female sex workers in Pingxiang city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region

Objective To understand the condom use among female sex workers(FSWs) of different nationalities and in entertainment establishment of different classes.Method A cross-sectional survey was carried out among FSWs in urban areas and border trade area of Pingxiang city from April to May,2010,using a randomized cluster sampling.An interviewer-administered standardized questionnaire was used to measure the characteristics of FSWs,knowledge of AIDS,condom use and intervention.Data were analyzed with SPSS 13.0.Results A total of 262 FSW completed the survey.The proportion of condom use in the last commercial sex was 79.77%,but it was significantly lower in Chinese FSWs than in Vietnamese FSWs(χ2=20.24,P0.01).The proportions of FSWs who persistently/sometimes/never used condoms in commercial sex last month was 59.16%,29.01% and 11.83%,respectively.And they were significantly different among different classes of entertainment establishments and different nationalities(χ2=9.9,P=0.007;χ2=7.72 P=0.006).The factors related with condom use were age,hometown and the classes of establishments according to the multiple regression of logistic model.Conclusion Chinese elder FSWs in low class establishments used condom much less than the others in commercial sex.In the future,attention should be paid to the characteristics of FSWs,establishments of different classes and FSWs of different nationalities in order to conduct relevant interventions to promote condom use.
