Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and its relation to lymphangiogenesis in papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods The tissue sections were collected from 60 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The expression of COX-2 was detected by envision immunohistochemical staining; the lymph vessel density (LVD) was calculated by counting numbers of D2-40 positive lymph vessel. Results The positive COX-2 expression rate in papillary thyroid carcinoma was higher than that in normal thyroid tissue (χ2=25.34,P0.05). COX-2 expression rate in papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastasis was higher than that without lymph node metastasis (χ2=3.796,P0.05). The LVD in papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastasis was remarkably higher than that without lymph node metastasis (t=13.21,P0.01). COX-2 expression was positively correlated with LVD in papillary thyroid carcinoma (r=0.762,P0.01). Conclusion COX-2 may be involved in lynphangiogenesis and lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma.
