Expression of MMP-9 in transitional cell carcinoma of bladder and its significance

Abstract

Objective To study the expression of matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9) in transitional cell carcinoma of bladder(TCCB) and its significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were used to detect the expressions of MMP-9 in 30 surgical resected specimens from patients with TCCB (experimental group) and 5 normal bladder tissues(control group). Results MMP-9 had different degree expressions in experimental group, but the expression was weak or negative in control group. Furthermore, in different grades and stages of tumor tissue, the positive expressions of MMP-9 were significantly increased with stage and grade, there were significant differences in various groups (P0.05,respectively). Conclusion The expression of MMP-9 is significantly correlated with the pathological grade and stage of TCCB, it could be used as an important index to judge the aggressive and metastatic biologic behavior of TCCB in clinic.
